Consultation for violence in workplace and academic settings

It can be a challenge to understand the complexities of the risk for violence that a person poses in the workplace or campus community.

When violence occurs in the workplace or campus community, you have legal obligation to pursue a risk assessment. MPSC will provide you with relevant and comprehensive risk assessments and case management strategies that enable you to fulfill your obligation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act Section 32.

Carefully matched to each unique risk assessed, we form individualized approaches and case management strategies suited to your workplace or academic setting.

MPSC offers a number of different services that include:

  • thorough assessment of behavioural risk
  • comprehensive risk management recommendations
  • consultations on risk management approaches
  • specific risk assessment of particular violent behaviours like stalking and domestic violence in the workplace or campus community
  • follow-up on dynamic risk factors as well as interventions for the employee
  • training for Human Resources consultants on mitigating risk in the workplace

At MPSC, we welcome you in arranging any combination of risk assessment and consultation services or bundle them together that meets your particular workplace or campus community’s needs.

Psychological services and  treatment for those impacted by violence in the workplace

Mitigating future risk of violence in the workplace sometimes means providing services and treatments to those impacted by the violence. It’s in your interest to provide your employees with these services. MPSC will provide psychological tools needed for our clients to overcome motivational barriers.

Those impacted can include:

(a) The recipient of violence in the workplace or campus community may find it difficult to return to work and can be left feeling anxious, traumatized and fearful.

MPSC can provide support and return-to-work strategies for those individuals who were the target of violence in the workplace or campus community.

(b) Conversely, the individual who has been violent in the workplace or campus community can be angry, shame-filled and unsure of how to proceed in their work or learning environment.

MPSC also provides intensive counseling that focuses on responsibility taking, and coaching of new behaviours in the work or learning environment for those who were violent.

All of our psychological services are provided in a non-judgemental, caring and authentic manner.

Risk assessment and psychological services for offenders

At MPSC, we recognize that offenders may be reluctant and/or resistant to complying with their referral for treatment.

In helping offenders overcome such barriers and reintegrate back into the community, MPSC works with offenders to understand their hesitation and to take responsibility for their offences. We uncover creative ways of encouraging offenders to do so in a meaningful way.

We are thoroughly knowledgeable in areas of domestic violence, sexual offending, and violent offenses, to name a few. We also take a team approach in assisting offenders by actively partnering with the criminal justice system and its agents.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is the bedrock of how we do our work at MPSC. However, there are exceptions to what we can keep confidential.

MPSC is ethically obligated to reduce risk if we think you are at imminent harm to yourself or others by coordinating and contacting the appropriate resources.

MPSC is legally obligated to:

  • contact a child welfare agency if a person under the age of 16 is in danger
  • contact a regulated health professional college if you share that one of it’s member is sexually abusing his/her clients/patients
  • provide your file or appear at a court or legal proceeding if summoned
If you’ve been referred to MPSC by a third party (eg., your employer, your school, probation), there may be an expectation to report on aspects of our work together. Every effort will be made on MPSC’s part to be transparent on what needs to be reported and to keep everything else confidential.

Privacy

MPSC vigorously guards the personal health information that you provide.

The personal health information we collect (PHI; eg. medical history, medication) is used to help coordinate and provide the best psychological care. If we use your personal health information for any other purpose, we will seek your consent first.

You are able to direct how and what parts of your PHI is disclosed to other health professionals. MPSC may deem some of the information you restrict to be necessary for other attending health professionals to provide appropriate care. In those circumstances, we are legally obligated to inform those health professionals that some aspect of the PHI they’ve received is limited.

You are able to request your clinical file at any time. Please allow MPSC one week to gather and collate the record for your review. MPSC will take the time to go over the file with you. If you believe an inaccuracy exists in the record, MPSC will be happy to review and add a correction or an amendment.

MPSC is also legally obligated to keep your clinical file for a period of 10 years from the date of your last contact with us. In cases where a strong chance of a legal summons could occur, to protect you, we will keep your file for your lifetime.

Appointments & Cancellations

The type of appointment determines the time you spend with us at MPSC.

Psychotherapy appointments are 50 minutes in duration while consultations, depending on the case, can range from 15 to 60 minutes. Depending on the complexity of a case, an assessment may take several hours to a couple of days. Before you embark on any service with MPSC, we will give you our best estimation of the time needed to perform the work you’re requesting.

For general psychotherapy, MPSC charges the hourly rate suggested by the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA). More specialized work performed by MPSC will be charged at a rate higher than what is suggested

by OPA and will be discussed with you in further detail at your first meeting with us.

MPSC requires 24 hours notice of cancelation and you will not incur any charges. You will be charged the full fee of your appointment if you cancel less than 24 hours or do not appear.

MPSC typically requires payment at the end of each appointment. Other financial arrangements can be made at your request. Any outstanding payments will be subject to debt collection.
